Some themes to discuss: despite the creepy tone of Eyes Wide Shut, paranoia about the rich and powerful is overblown because human groups in great number are mathematically prone to revealing secrets. A shot of a red haired topless patient cuts to shot of the daughter in the same space. Like the daughter, the prostitute also has the same toy tiger, and a stroller in front of her apartment, and is seen next to a stack of games called "Magic Circle." The other prostitute also has red hair like the daughter. There are hints that the daughter may be conditioned early for this situation her mother teaches her which guy has more money. The doctor manipulates ordinary people with cash and his doctor's badge, but finds out a more elite group is manipulating him. The subtext is that women have complicated physical relations with men of power, age, and/or money- including the husband supporting his wife. It is also obvious that sex is either thwarted or not enjoyed without conditions- only in the husband's mind is anybody appreciating a direct sexual experience. Ultimately, the husband confesses because he wants the stability (of the blue front door of his home and office.) *This red/ blue scheme highlights how differently the husband and wife manage their temptations.* There is a reversal shift in the second part: as he re-encounters each character, reds are now in background while blue objects are in the foreground (ex: clothing). The ample nudity reinforces the message about infidelity, but like many great films, the movie is about something else.įor example, the blue shapes highlight the state of normalcy where hidden desires are managed- while the red door, red awning, red room, red truck are tempting pathways for Bill to indulge in extramarital sex his wife, and the costume owner are in blue light when they cut off these temptations. Today's youth, raised on researching conspiracy theories and free porn on the web, will probably decipher that this movie is clearly showing dispassionate sex as a product of social exploitation and power inequalities. When Eyes Wide Shut was first promoted, baby boomers with an appetite for steamy sex scenes were set to be disappointed on opening day. Though there is a lot of full frontal nudity + the orgy scene which lasts for 4 minutes, there is a meaning, it's just very hard to find. So in the end, EYES WIDE SHUT is a disturbing, sometimes satirical, and thoughtful movie. Language contained about 20 f words, not much else. Many people have sex yet it is not titilating, it's disturbing with barely any moaning at at. This is so evident in the EXTREMELY GRAPHIC secret society-party-orgy scene. How does sex with someone you love compare to sex with someone you barely even know. What is the movie about? I think it's about intimacy and how that compares to sex without mental relations. But later that night as I thought about it, I was overcome with questions and confusion and finally made a decision. At first I didn't know what to think of it. It was on Netflix so I decided to give it a try since Kubrick was my favorite director (still is). For example, the first time I saw this movie I was 13 years old. It really depends on the maturity level and how you interpret the film. Though I usually put an age for my reviews, for this one I can't. Yet, even though it has a meaning, young kids and immature adults (hence, whoever called this movie porno trash). What does it mean to give yourself to another body and mind? That was a huge question on my mind after I pondered a couple hours as to what the movie means. This is one of my favorites film because it prompts you to ask questions and doesn't give you the answers. Eyes wide shut is an amazing film with great philosophical themes and messages, unlike other reviews that call this movie "Pornographic garbage".
